CLOCS Background – Working for a safer future

Between 2008 and 2013, 55 per cent of cyclist fatalities in London involved a heavy goods vehicle. A disproportionate number of these were construction vehicles.

In 2012 Transport for London commissioned an independent review of the construction sector’s transport activities to understand the causes of these collisions and how they might be prevented.

The resulting ‘Construction Logistics and Cyclist Safety’ (CLOCS) report was published in February 2013 by Transport Research Laboratory. The report found that:

  • Blind spots on construction vehicles could be larger than general haulage vehicles
  • Road safety was not considered in same way as health and safety on-site
  • There was little understanding of the impact of construction activity on road safety
  • There was no common standard for the industry to work to in order to manage work related road safety

In response, the construction logistics industry demonstrated its commitment to change and identified actions under three work streams to improve road safety. CLOCS brings together the construction logistics industry to revolutionise the management of work related road risk and embed a road safety culture across the industry as the UK’s population and economy grows.

CLOCS brings the construction logistics industry together to revolutionise the management of work related road risk (WRRR) and ensure a road safety culture is embedded across the industry. By working together we can help protect pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and other road users who share the roads with construction vehicles.

If you already have Silver FORS you automatically gain CLOCS.

  • An outstandingly delivered training course
    David Chappell

I recently attended a CPC Transport Manager’s course through my work, initially to gain a better understanding of the CPC requirements for lorries. What I didn’t realise was just how much work, detail, and responsibility goes into running lorries and meeting the legal requirements! The training itself was absolutely fantastic. Although there was a lot of information to take in and plenty of revision, the course was delivered brilliantly. A big shout-out to David, who is clearly an expert in his field. I’m now excited to see what opportunities this qualification can open up in the future. Great training, and a huge thank you to the Ridgway team for all the support!

  • The team were extremely helpful

I was recommended Ridgeway to help pass my CPC managers course. It was all new to me and i was very nervous before starting. From day one the trainer and the team were extremely helpful and educational and actually made it very enjoyable. I unfortunately didn’t pass the first time but they gave me all the support I needed to pass the 2nd time around, and I would highly recommend them from start to finish.

    Glenn Wolstencroft

My experience with Ridgeway Training has been exceptional from start to finish. The entire process was structured, supportive, and clearly designed to help learners succeed, whatever their starting point. What truly set the journey apart, though, was the guidance, encouragement, and support I received from Chris and Ann — especially when an out‑of‑the‑ordinary situation arose. Their professionalism and willingness to go the extra mile made a real difference. I would thoroughly recommend Ridgeway Training to anyone looking to gain a qualification in the courses they offer and to further develop their career prospects.

    Daniel Flintoft

Absolutely faultless training company. From start to finish the experience with Ridgeway was brilliant. Communications to and from was far beyond that of any other training company I have ever used and the delivery of the International Transport Managers course was phenomenal and ensured I entered the exam with full confidence and secured a high pass mark in the exams. I can not recommend Ridgeway Training enough for any of their training courses.

I’ve just completed my Transport Manager course with Ridgeway Training and I can honestly say the whole experience was outstanding from beginning to end. The course materials arrived promptly, and their dedicated app made studying so much easier and more structured. The support from the Ridgeway team has been second to none, guiding me every step of the way. A special thanks goes to David Pries, whose patience and commitment went above and beyond—he even gave up his own time to help me through the areas I found most challenging. I would highly recommend Ridgeway to anyone considering training; their professionalism and support are second to none.
